A Look at Administration Console of Zimbra

shared zimbra hostingSuperior administrative control is one of the primary benefits of using a customized email service. In fact, many companies are switching to Zimbra, thanks to its superior administrative panel. In this brief blog post, we will explore the administrative console of Zimbra.

Introduction

Zimbra offers a browser-based user interface that can be used to centrally manage the user accounts and Zimbra servers. When the Zimbra collaboration suite has been installed, administrators can configure username and login credentials for themselves. When the admin is done installing the setup, they may login right away.

About Administrator Accounts

The administrative panel is accessible only by the administrators. As far as the network edition of Zimbra Email Hosting is concerned, global and domain administrators are two kinds accounts which can be created. Global administrators have complete access and by extent widespread privilege to control facets such as servers, global settings, domains, and user accounts. A domain administrator, on the other hand, can only manipulate the account settings for the specific domain.

The Administration Console

After the logging on to administration console, there is a navigation pane on the left of the screen, through which the following controls can be accessed:

Accounts – All inbox accounts that belong to the specific zimbra account. The user may create, manage, delete, and change passwords and settings here.

Distributions lists – Includes all distribution lists. Users can create new lists, or change the existing members of a given list.

Resources – In the resources option, admins can display the location where meetings are to be scheduled along with the resources required for the same.

Class of service – Lists the COS that have been created. There is a default COS, which users may edit or delete. They may also create new COSs.

Servers – Here, host names are displayed along with a description. Admins may configure Global Address List (GAL) and authentication mechanisms of the said hosts.

Zimlets – Zimlets are like add-ons for Zimbra. Admins can add new ones, and manage access privileges for the same through the Zimlets option on the navigation pane.

Mail queues – Through this, admins can access all messages on the Zimbra Mail Transfer Agent (MTA), regardless of whether they are incoming, active, held in queue or differed.

Other options present on the navigation pane include server stats, aliases and global settings.

Zimbra Command Line Interface.

There’s another way to configure and control Zimbra; through their Command Line Interface. The CLI contains utilities such as ‘message tracing’, ‘provision accounts in bulk’, ‘create self-signed certificates’ and ‘start and stop services’. Note that these utilities may not be available in the regular admin console of Zimbra.

If you do decide to switch to Zimbra, make sure you hire a reliable server host that offers downtime and constant support.
